Comedy legend Bob Newhart to guest star

Bob Newhart, the legendary stand-up comedian and actor known for his sitcoms The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart in the 1970s and '80s, is set to guest star on The Big Bang Theory.

Newhart will play a professor of great importance to Sheldon and also to Leonard, too. His character, Professor Proton, is the former host of Sheldon's favorite science TV show as a kid. In the episode, which is set to air on Thursday, May 2, Sheldon sets out to meet his idol when he finds out Professor Proton can now be hired for parties and events.

In recent years, the six-time Emmy nominated actor has made guest appearances in shows including ER, Desperate Housewives and NCIS. His guest spot on The Big Bang Theory marks his first half-hour sitcom apperance since 2005.
