HBO Max releases official Stuart Fails to Save the Universe trailer Posted 9 hours ago
HBO Max has released the official trailer for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, the sci-fi comedy spin-off of The Big Bang Theory, ahead of its premiere next month.
The single-camera series follows comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) after he accidentally breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, setting off a multiverse catastrophe. Stuart is joined on his mission to restore reality by his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), geologist Bert (Brian Posehn), and the ever-irritating quantum physicist Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie). Along the way, they come face-to-face with alternate-universe versions of familiar Big Bang Theory characters. As the title suggests, Stuart's attempt to put reality back together does not always go according to plan.
The new trailer opens with Stuart and Bert walking through a dragon-infested marketplace, where Stuart explains that he has been told he is "the chosen one" who will set things right. When Stuart asks Bert whether they should believe the man who told him that, Bert points out, "That guy was you." The trailer then shows Stuart and the gang tumbling through a string of chaotic alternate realities, from apocalyptic landscapes and militarized worlds to a snowy mountains and a universe where Kripke has become the dictator of South Pasadena.
In another scene, a hooded Denise pulls a gun on Stuart before realizing she is threatening her real-universe boyfriend. When Stuart asks what she has been up to, Denise replies, "Robbing, mostly." Elsewhere, Stuart finds himself trapped in a sci-fi pod reminiscent of The Matrix, where his most pressing concern is that he is now bald. Later, when Denise asks Stuart what his plan is, he admits, "I don't really have one. I'm kind of new to the action genre."
Thirty seconds into the trailer, we see a kaleidoscope showing several familiar faces from The Big Bang Theory, including Ramona Nowitzki (Riki Lindhome) and Beverly Hofstadter (Christine Baranski). In a later scene, Penn and Teller are featured performing magic tricks for food. Previously released footage featured brief glimpses of Wil Wheaton and Joshua Malina, who played President Siebert.
Along with the trailer, HBO Max also released another key art poster, which features Stuart, Denise, Bert and Kripke standing atop a mountain peak with a colorful cosmic backdrop, with Stuart seemingly grasping the difficulty of the situation. The tagline reads: "Every universe needs a hero. We got Stuart."
HBO Max also released a new set of stills from the show. The images include Kripke in full dictator mode questioning Denise; Stuart holding a worn ration pack; Stuart and Denise in the comic book store beside the machine; and Stuart in a sci-fi pod. Several stills show Kripke, Bert and Denise in more serene tropical island setting. Another image shows the four main characters in army uniforms gathered around the machine, while the final still finds Bert, Kripke, Denise and Stuart waiting together at an airport.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is created, written and executive produced by The Big Bang Theory co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, along with screenwriter Zak Penn (Ready Player One). Danny Elfman, whose credits include The Simpsons and Beetlejuice, has composed the show's original theme music.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe premieres Thursday, July 23 at 9pm on HBO Max. A new episode will drop every Thursday and the first season will contain 10 episodes.
