THE BIG BANG THEORY
Monday 8:30 p.m.
-The Premise:
Two brainy best friends (Jim Parsons and former Roseanne star Johnny Galecki) and the remaining members of their "geek squad" try to fit into the social world at the coaching of their sexy new neighbor (Kaley Cuoco of 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter). Chuck Lorre (Two and a Half Men) is the creator.
-Lead-in: How I Met Your Mother
-Competition: Dancing With the Stars (ABC), Deal or No Deal (NBC), Prison Break (Fox), Aliens in America (CW)
-Who Was on the Panel:
Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar and co-creator/executive producers Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady.
-The Scoop:
If you think Kaley Cuoco is the next Chrissy Snow from Three's Company, guess again. According to Chuck Lorre:
"As we get more into developing the series and the characters, we're going to learn that her character is extremely capable. She grew up on a farm. She can fix a tractor. She can birth a calf, and she can do just about **** near anything that these guys can just sit around and talk about and complicate. So she's an extraordinary character in her own right, but in a different world than theirs.
-The Reality:
What might sound like a generic bore was actually a laugh-out loud riot in the pilot with flawless casting, strong chemistry and potential for long-term storytelling. All The Big Bang Theory needs to do is hold the limited audience (or build on) compatible lead-in How I Met Your Mother (which is still not capable of anchoring an evening). And that is not necessarily a difficult task by any means. But before anyone gets overly bullish, keep in mind that a good pilot does not necessarily make all that good a series. Remember former occupant The Class?
-Chance of Survival for The Big Bang Theory (Based on a scale of 1-1 to 10-1):
3-1
-Did You Know?:
Johnny Galecki's first regularly scheduled prime time series role was in a short-lived ABC comedy called Billy in 1992. Billy was a spin-off of Head of the Class, with Billy Connolly as a college instructor from Scotland.
