Guest Star: Bob Newhart
Bob Newhart was an American stand-up comedian and actor known for his deadpan delivery and slight stammer. Newhart's career as a comic took off in the 1960s with his hit monologues, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart and The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back!, which remain among the best-selling comedy albums in history.
Newhart is best known for his sitcoms The Bob Newhart Show, which ran for six seasons in the 1970s, and Newhart, which ran for eight seasons between 1982 and 1990. In later years, Newhart made guest appearances on shows including ER, Desperate Housewives, NCIS and Hot in Cleveland. He also starred in TV movies of The Librarian franchise and its follow-up TV series.
Bob Newhart won the only Emmy award of his five-decade career for his appearance as Arthur Jeffries, a.k.a. Professor Proton, in The Big Bang Theory episode "The Proton Resurgence". Newhart has later made three appearances as Professor Proton on Young Sheldon.
Newhart's most memorable film role was as Papa Elf in the 2003 holiday comedy Elf, starring Will Ferrell, considered one of few classic Christmas movies to be released this century. Newhart's other film roles roles included Catch-22, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, and Horrible Bosses.
